With the refineries having to switch brews and having to eliminate the MTBEs, there is going to be a shortage. Especially when they have to purge the storage tanks and then certify that all the now-banned additives are gone. Come on folks, the refineries have to operate at 100% in order to supply the amount of fuel that we consume. If they have to reduce production, that causes a shortage. If you want to ensure that there is no shortage, then here is what you do. Lobby your Congress critter to eliminate the various blends used, lobby to have more refining capability built, and to allow the exploration of domestic sources (i.e. ANWRR).

More here:
Say Anything: Boutique Fuel Nonsense - North Dakota's Most Popular Political Blog

17 different blends!

Sarge, Out

New Link

Just linked to the LawDog. Sarge, CINCHOUSE, and SIT are off to the championship meet this week. As we will be away from the permanent command post for a day or three, posting may be a bit light (not that I am a heavy poster anyway). SIT made one more cut and so, will swim three events at the meet. If you happen to be in Nashville next weekend and looking for something to do, come on over to the Tracy Caulkins Aquatics Center, and see some of the best swimmers in Alabama, NW Florida and Tennesee. Sarge will be on deck somewhere while SIT will be in the water. CINCHOUSE will be watching us both and keeping us on the straight and narrow.

Sarge, Out

Update to Customer Service

The manager of the local shopping emporium that I opined about below contacted me yesterday with iquiries to establish my exact opservations. As I stated to her, there are training issues abounding. Now, I will give her credit, she did do some basic research as to when I had last been in (as this is a membership place) and that I had only purchased two items and what cashier had checked me out and taken my written IOU (check). As I stated, she agreed that said new cashier, did indeed break training and re-training would recommence soon. While I did not discuss all my observations with her, she and I would still be on the phone, we did establish that I was not treated a s member should have been. It seems that the other associates that I came into contact with are well known to her and this is not the first time that there have been issues of training with them. She did acknowledge that there is a training issue there and that she has been trying to resolve that issue for some time. Maybe, if she hired some competent associates, payed a decent wage, and payed attention to what was happening, she might find that "retraining" of associates would not be required.

Publik Educashun (part 3)

James Old Guy has it right. We are coming into the mid-terms and there are few things that you should now. I know it is early, but you need to be thinking of these things. According to the Constitution, the Senate is composed of three classes. Well, class 1 is up for re-election this year. Here are some issues that should be topping your list:

1. Border Security
2. Illegal Immigration
3. Budget/Pork

Just so you know, and if you live in PA, you need to really pay attention. Sen Specter is drafting legislation that would allow for guest workers to reside in the US and would also grant amnesty to a good portion of the illegal immigrants that are already here. You can find more information here We need to ask our Senators, especially those that are up for re-election, where they stand on these issues. I will not presume to tell you how to cast your vote, it is yours after all. I will ask you to cast it for the one that has the same ideals as you about the issues above. Click the link below and see if one of your Senators is listed. Contact them and let them how you feel.

http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm?Class=1

If you are in the State of Florida, Senator Bill Nelson is up for re-election. Make sure to contact his office and let him know your concerns.

Sarge, Out

Customer Service part whatever

You know, it gets worse and worse. Yesterday, SIT and I went to the place where they wear red and blue vests and this is what we observed. The lady in front of us was having some sort of difficulty and it seemed that EVERYBODY in the store was tied up with her. Not only that, there seemed to be an inordinate number of trainees on the registers that kept interrupting with questions. Now, I know that this place can park a order and even transfer it from one register to another. When SIT and I finally get to a register, after wasting 30 minutes of my time, the standard "have a nice day" was countered with "it's too late for that." Not to mention that when I inquired of another individual if he was the duty manager, he said no and just moved on, no offer of help, did not bother to contact manager. Next the guy at the door, didn't really seem to care that I had a bad experience. I tell you folks, it makes me want to scream sometimes. Guess I'll find unit manager contact info and let him know that he has a training issue in his store. Simple mistakes such as those made yesterday are going to cost him.

UPDATE: I just sent an e-mail to customer seervice (yeah, right). They are also required for our students to get promoted to the next grade. Had a good laugh with SIT about the FCAT the other day. School sends hoema booklet about the FCAT and it states that they school's do not teach the test. SIT looked at me and raised the big red BS flag on that. We have Florida state editions of text books that have FCAT specific questions. Now, let us try that again. I know that the schools are teaching the FCAT, why else would you have a special state edition of a text? Let's try something really useful and get rid of the special texts and get one that will prepare our children for life in the real world and then how about we test them on that text. Seems we took the test and wrote the text from it rather than the right way.

Sarge, Out

Saturday's chores

Well, another week has gone by here at Sarge's command post and CINCHOUSE has several taskings for Sarger to take care of. First, the irrigation system needs a repair and CINCHOUSE needs some "organic" material for the garden patch. It does look like rain out there and I want to get this done before that starts. Also, need to change the oil in the prime mover, that needs doing this week as we have swim meets every weekend between now and championships. Better finish this cup o' jumpstart (just love that term, thanks Guy!). While I do not claim a party affiliation, I do tend to lean a bit to the right.

Sarge, Out

Services Rendered

Rob at Say Anything found this tidbit. After a recent swim meet, SIT, CINCHOUSE and I went to the new steak house in town. Now, this was the first time that I had been to this particular chain, but had been told that the experience would be memorable. Let me tell you it was. Now, I, as a young man, worked in the food service business and the one thing that was impressed upon me by my bosses was that no matter what, the CUSTOMER is the most important person. Anyhooo, the establishment was busy, and we had to wait for a bit to be seated. Not a big deal, and the wait wasn't that long. When young miss (YM) led us to a table, she inquired if it would be ok, well, CINCHOUSE indicated to YM that it was not accetptable as it was in the middle of the floor. CINCHOUSE inquired about a half-booth just a bit away and YM seated us there and decided that we were not worth a "enjoy your meal." STRIKE 1. So, Sarge and the troops sit and wait for waiter (YW) to come and inquire about liquid refreshment. And we wait. Finally, waiter from another section comes over and inquires if out waiter has been by. I respond in the negative and waiter goes and get YW to actually serve customers. STIRKE 2. Liquids finally arrive and we inform YW as to what we would like to taste on this fine evening. Well, finally dinner arrives and we engage in savoring same. YW comes by and inquires of SIT if he would care for another beverage (extra charge, of course) and since it is SITs birthday, he is permitted to expend funds. CINCHOUSE and I are not offered refills on our beverages of choice. STRIKE 3.

After check arrives (no offer of desert was made, STRIKE 4), I place enough Andrew Jacksons in holder to cover tab ($39 and change) and don't even wait for the change (less than a George Washington). As we are departing, I inform manager that it would be a LONG TIME before I returned to his establishment. After he inquires about my experience, and let him know what my experience was like and that I believe that he has a training problem that needs to be addressed. Manager entices me to returne with an offer of buying dinner and suggests that I request a specific server next time to experience the best he has to offer. Maybe CINCHOUSE and I will take him up on that soon. Seems there is a special occasion this week that might do. And the food was extraordinarily tasty.

What think you?

Sarge, Out

Busy Week

Quite a bit has happened since we left the command post for the swim meet last Friday. While not his best meet, Sarge-In-Training did well. He recently aged up into the 13/14 age group, he made a good showing. No championship cuts, but that is ok. This is a tough age group and the cuts are unbelievable.

I was on deck until 1700 hrs on Sunday and as you know, SuperBowl XL started at 1730 hrs. We left Auburn University and after one quick stop for go-juice just outside Montgomery, AL, we made a run for the command post. SIT and I were on the sofa in front of the big screen in time for the 4th quarter to start. What normally takes me about 3.5 to 4 hours, I did in less that 3. Of course, not every Sunday is SuperBowl Sunday.

Sarge, Out

Haloscan commenting and trackback have been added to this blog.

It's all Bush's Fault

U.S. payrolls grew by 193,000 in January - Stocks Economy - MSNBC.com

Go ahead, read.it. Last night our boys left the pool knowing that they had won and that practice this AM was optional. More than half of them showed up this morning anyway.

Out girls left the pool thinking that they had lost and knowing that practice was mandatory. Seems, however, that the scorekeepers at last night's meet made an error. They forgot to add in 3 points, in our favor, and so at practice this AM, they learned that they had won. Good job to all our swimmers. Only have one meet left and then our timed finals where the best swimmers from each school come together and compete one last time. Should be a lot of fun, wish them luck.

Sarge, Out

CINCHOUSE

Well, just had to put this out there. 16 years ago, CINHOUSE and I got married (yep, believe it, I remembered). POTUS puts forth a plan and when it is not acted upon, the nation will suffer. Nope, wrong. The Senate does not represent the people. The Senators from each state are to represent the STATE that sent them. At least until the 17th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. While it changed how Senators were elected, it did not change whose interests they represented. Since the House of Representative is based on population, they represent the people, but the Senate is comprised of two Senators for each state, regardless of population.

Now, Sarge, why this topic?

Well, while I was taking CINCHOUSE to one of the local markets, I heard on the radio, that the Utah Legilature has introduced a bill to change how Senators are selected in that state. Amazingly, they are wanting to go back to the way it was done before the 17th Amendment. The DJ was grousing about the people not having a voice in their representation. Well, they still have their reps in the House and that is their representation. Maybe it is time to repeal the 17th Amendment and acknowledge that the framers knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they wrote Aritlce 1, Section 3 of the Constitution of the United States.

Sarge, Out

1st Amendment Rights

Where in the world do people get the idea that the 1st Amendment protects their right to be a loud, foul mouthed SOB? The picture of him "keeping up international relations" will have men fighting to buy him a beer anywhere he goes.

Gunny, this one's for you

Sarge, out

Wireless

Nate from Wasted Electrons tells me I need to go wireless at the Command Post. That is next on my home network list of things to do. CINCHOUSE has even mentioned it. Her computer was recently moved and I had to run a cable for it. Luckily for me, we already had a hole in the wall just the right size that I was able to feed the CAT5 through. With Sarge-In-Training becoming more computer savy and owning a new notebook, and Sarge considering getting a new one, maybe it is time. Now, I just need to find a wireless system that will cover the 3000 sq/ft of the Command Post so that I can sit in the Florida room and surf. I also thought it might not be a bad idea to tell you all a little bit more about me. I was born and raised in St. Louis, MO and am a 1984 graduate of Ritenour High School (Go Huskies!). After high school, I attended the University of Missouri, St Louis for a semester and discovered that college was not for me, so I went and talked to the recruiters. The Air Force seemed the best fit for me, so on March 29, 1985, the Air Force and I started our relationship. The Air Force, in its infinite wisdom, decided to train me in satellite communications. Over the years, the Air Force merged us with wideband communications and telemetry systems.

In 2005, with a solid 20 years under my belt, I hung up my uniform and moved into the next chapter of my life. My family and I have settled, for the time being, in the Fort Walton Beach, FL area.

I am married and have one son. I refer to my better half as CINCHOUSE (Commander-In-Chief, House, for the uninitiated) and my son is SIT for Sarge-in-Training. SIT is a competitive swimmer with one of the local swim teams here and I am an official with USA Swimming.

Leave me a note to let me know that you came by.

Sarge out

What in the . . .

PaulVA over at the Daily Kos is saying that this disaster at the mine is the Republican's fault (another symptom of BDS). here he is saying that in 1994 the Republicans changed the way that OSHA operates. Based on the criteria from the state, our school district has received an A grade in the last four years. I have to wonder how, and I am STILL trying to find the "standard" used by the state. I see comments from teachers that think that subject/verb agreement is only a suggestion. I would correct their comments and return them, but I am concerned that they would take it out on my son and his grades would suffer.

Students are rarely challenged here. Maybe I need to set up a conference with the school and set forth my standards as a parent and a taxpayer, there's a thought, let them know I am watching and I'll set the standard. SIT knows that my standards are high and I hold him to high standards as well. Maybe it is time for other like-minded parents to speak up. SIT did real well in the War Eagle Invatational and took 13th overall for his age group. He only swam 8 events out of a possible 13, so that should tell you something about his skills in the water. We travelled to Brewton, AL for the Blue Angel Invitational swim meer hosted by the Pensacola Navy Youth swim team and they put on good meet. SIT had no real competitiion at this meet, so while he didn't swim a lot of best times, he did win every event he was entered in. There were several parents that commented on his performance. One parent from a neighboring team took some photos and as soon as I can, I will post some and provide a link to them. Our next meet will see us travelling to Nashville, TN for the Meet of Champions hosted by XCEL Aquatics.

25th Annual War Eagle - Take 2

Well, Sarge and family have returned to the permanent command post and had an excellent trip. I have my views and you, of course, have yours. If they coincided, Great! If not, that's ok. we can still be friends as long as we respect each others right to believe what we want. Now, I can hear you now "That just fine Sarge, but where are you taking this?" And the answer is this.

Ann Coulter has lost her mind over the Miers nomination to the SCOTUS. Read her rant here

There are only two requirements to sit on the Court. Nomination by the President of the United States and confirmation by the Senate (a simple majority). That is it. I don't care what law school they attended (no requirement to be a lawyer), what church he/she is a member of (no religious test permitted). In fact, President Bush could knock on my front door right now and just say the words "Sarge, your country needs you to serve again. You are hereby nominated to be an Associate Justice to the Supremem Court of the United States." Or words to that effect. Now, you want to hear the left go nuts? It is the short course season and he is swimming in a 25 yard pool. Well, he swam the first 150 yards with no problem. Decided that he wanted a break and then swam the last 50 yards. Would somebody please explain to me what the "qualifications" to be a justice on the Supreme Court? There is nothing in the U.S. Constitution that tells me. All the Constitution tells me is that the President appoints the Justices (Article II, Section 2). You don't have to be a lawyer. All you need is the Predential appointment and confirmation of the U. S. Senate (BTW that means 51 Aye votes). Senators, Ms Meirs deserves an up/down vote. No need for debate on the floor. No committee (Not in the Constitution). Just a vote. The people have sent you to Washington to do a job and you are spending too much time on petty politics. Well, for Sarge-in-Training, AKA Son, it finally paid off. At his last swim meet, he set a new meet record in the 50 backstroke (SCY). While breaking a record is not that easy, especially at this distance, doing so by .75 seconds is a very big deal. Usually for a short distance, records are broken by .1 or .2 seconds. And to top it off, the previous holder of the record is on the same team. Come on, just let the market regulate itself. Basic supply and demand. If you start talking about shortages, people will start filling their tank all the time instead of just when they need to. It's OK to buy gas, but if you have two or more vehicles, fill only one this week and wait for next week to fill the other. That way, when I need gas, it will be there. Jessie Jackson needs a swift kick to his hind parts (I know, not a revelation, but I had to say it)

2. The mayor of NOLA and the gov of LA need to have their hind parts kicked as well

3. I can log in and check out the Son's school work and get an almost realtime update of his grades. It helps parents keep track of what is going on in school.

Anyway, checked Son's classes/grades last night and noticed one assignment had a 0 (zero). Brings that grade down to a 72% (C). Sarge is not happy at this point. Asks Son for an explanation, Son assures Sarge that he turned in assignment. Now Sarge being Sarge, and being from Missouri, I need some proof. I send a screen shot to school with Son and request information from teacher. Come to find out, Son did turn in assignment minus one very important piece of information. Ok, recruits, what did Son forget to do:

A. Complete assignment and turn in blank page? -- Nope, did work
B. Failed to place name on paper? -- You bet.

What's is really annoying is that said teacher made a point to tell me that she has difficulty in deciphering Sons handwriting. Son is briefed on importance of legible handwriting (frequently, sort of like the "Don't Drink and Drive" briefs when Sarge was still active). Teacher will not allow Son to place name on assignment and get credit (kudos to teacher, Son must learn lesson). Son now has to make time to get a make-up assignment from teacher, if she will allow.

While the dad in me would wish that teacher would allow Son to place name on assignment and get credit, Sarge sees the life lesson the Son must learn and support teacher on her decision

WTH

Hat tip to Kim

Seems a decorated Marine has been stripped of his residency status by Austin Community College because, get this, he spent time in Iraq and now must pay non-resident tuition rates to attend classes and get educated. Son has learned that you will not win every race. But the ones where the guy next to him is a bit taller and out-reaches him to win by 1/100th of a second, are the ones where he knows that there is always next time. At least that is what one of my English teachers told me. Last night were the 400/800 Meter Freestyle events. Since no one on the team had made qualifying time for these events, we decided to go out to dinner as team. Dinner was at Bucca di Peppo's and let me tell you, it beats the Olive Garden hands down. I love the Olive Garden, so that should tell you about this place. The cuisine is southern Italian and is served "family style." That means that the dishes are LOADED with food and placed on the table. And then you serve yourself from the serving dish. I like this because you can sample what some of the others have ordered as well. Our group had Veal Parmesian, Chicken Marsala, Chicken Parmesian, two different kinds of pizza, Manacotti, ravioli. Now my mouth is watering. Stand-by......... Ok, back to the subject at hand. Son swims the 50 and 100 meter Breaststroke today. He is seeded in 14th in the 50 and 12th in the 100. I'll let you know how he does later when the results are posted.

Swimming Championships Take 2

Well, tomorrow we will leave for Nashville so that the son may compete in the championship meet. With an attention span of a fruit fly, boys of this age are liable to do anything when they get bored. And bored they will get in about 2 minutes. Mrs. Roberts seemed to handle it well. What can you do? Young Master Roberts will probably see these pictures and his mom will eventually be able to laugh about this. When a storm this size is headed your way, you RUN, fast and far (well, at least we ran :)). We will hunker down here and enjoy the swimming. As I stated in an earlier post, I love swimming in that another person cannot really effect how you perform in the water. You have to do it all on your own. The coach can provide direction, the officials just observe and only two really do anything, unless ther is an infraction. I guess that other swimmers could effect you, but only if you let them. I have seen swimmers intimidate my son, but you know, when he is on, he is on.

Hope to get back to the homestead soon and get the clean-up work done and get life back to normal until the next one comes.

High School Students

I am a member of Grunt's Military, a military related website and forum. I really like this forum because we have standards that all members are expected to meet. For example, we are expected to spellcheck our posts and use proper English. Unfortunately, we have several high schoolers in the various Jr ROTC programs that think that they know more than those of us who have worn the uniform and will disrespect us at every turn. Parents, what are you teaching your children about respecting others? Would they do this if we were face-to-face? I really don't think so. I'll lay a dollar to doughnuts that they don't do this at school either.

Heads Bunker: For the Children

Read this and come back

Heads Bunker: For the Children

This is why I like swimming. You can see EXACTLY where you finished in your heat. My son is a swimmer and he is at the top of his age group right now. Does this mean that he wins every race, HELL NO! He loses some. However, when he steps up on the blocks for the next race, he doesn't think about the last one. Each race is swum on its own and then scored. There are winners (you can tell by the big smile), and there are losers (sometimes they cry). Then you have those that swim hard, but get disqualified for some infraction. Do these get upset, sometimes, but most get over it pretty quick. Some do cry about this too. In swimming, at a meet, you get ONE (1) chance to get it right. If you do, you win. If you don't, you lose. While life is not always like swimming, I have found out that it can be. You may get more than one chance to get it right, but sometimes you get one chance and win or lose, that is it.

Do you own property? It also explains why I can make change faster at the store than the cashier can with the cash register.

State Specific Texts

What is this? I noticed this year that my son's textbooks were all the FLORIDA EDITION. The publisher also published editions for other states. It took my most of the school year to figure this out, but the edition of the textbooks is to prepare the students to take the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test that is administered each spring. While I don't have a problem with an assessment for progressing to the next grade, why does it have to be specific to Florida? Why not something more like the ACT or SAT that is more general in nature and really assess how a student is doing?

Education

What is with our education system? I frequent a forum that has very simple rules. One of which is proper use of the English language. This includes spelling, grammar, and puncuation. Now we all know that people will misspell a word every now and then, but some of the high school students that are on this forum I don't think they could write their way out of a paper bag. Spelling and use of grammar is atrocious. These young people are the future of this country.

Sarge Says

I am a Retired Air Force Technical Sergeant.
